The New Mexico Commission for Deaf and Hard of Hearing works with a variety of topics related to the Deaf, Hard of Hearing, Deaf Blind, and Speech Disabled communities.

Some of these topics result in potential legislation both in the state and nationally as well as position statements and reports. In these sections we provide up to date information on current issues related to the aforementioned community. With the state and national information we hope to empower and educate the community at large.

The New Mexico Commission for Deaf and Hard of Hearing provides effective leadership, education, advocacy, and programs to reduce barriers to the social, economic, educational, cultural, and intellectual well-being of Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and DeafBlind New Mexicans and their families, friends, and colleagues.

The New Mexico Commission for Deaf & Hard of Hearing is a dynamic resource that will enhance the quality of life for Deaf and Hard of Hearing citizens of New Mexico by being:

Statutes & Rules

  • The New Mexico Commission for Deaf and Hard of Hearing was created by Legislative action in 1991 by the New Mexico Legislature (NMSA 1978 §28-11B-2) to promote services for Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and Deaf-Blind people throughout New Mexico. The Commission Board is comprised of seven members, with the majority being Deaf or Hard of Hearing by requirement. Among the seven members, three are ex-officio members representing specified organizations and agencies, and four are governor appointed without regard to party affiliation and with the Senate’s advice and consent.

The Commission formally began service on July 26, 1991. The Commission provides several services including oversight of the Relay services for the state of New Mexico. Listed are the New Mexico Statutes and Rules established by the New Mexico Legislature. Also listed are the Federal Telecommunications rules and the New Mexico Telecommunications Act.
